With the popularity of “big box” stores, it is easy to get the
same old jewelry blues. Every woman has gone through it at least
once in her life. A special occasion or event comes up that
requires a special piece of jewelry. You want to find a piece of
unique fashion jewelry that shows off your style and
originality. But, when you get to the mall, you find the same
old thing in every store. You are forced to sacrifice your sense
of fashion (and a lot of cash) to buy whatever you can find. You
arrive at your big event, only to find out that you, and three
other ladies, are wearing the exact same jewelry ensemble. Your
elegant evening turns from “Cinderella” to “Attack of the
Clones.” How embarrassing!
Why is it hard to find Unique Fashion Jewelry? Let’s face it
ladies, America’s “big box” trend is causing a negative effect
on our shopping selection. National and world-wide chains are
slowly pushing most small, locally owned stores out of business.
The result: Fewer stores, a smaller jewelry selection, fashion
clones and the same old jewelry blues.
How do we cure the jewelry blues? There is no reason for you to
suffer through the same old jewelry blues ever again! Cinderella
moments will follow fast if you master the following four steps:
1. Pick a style or theme of unique fashion jewelry that is
meaningful to you. For some women it will be a special design or
insignia, like a Fleur de Lis. For others, it will be a certain
jewelry designer or color. Many will choose jewelry that is an
antique, a collectable or a historically accurate replica. No
matter what the reasoning, find a jewelry design or theme that
is special to you. Look through jewelry books, fashion
magazines, and the internet.
2. Do your homework. Once you find the jewelry style or styles
that you want, research which manufacturer makes it and which
retailers carry the line. This information helps you in two
ways. First, if you know where your favorite fashion jewelry is
made and how easy/hard it is to find it, you will have a better
idea of how much you should spend. Obviously, harder to find
limited edition pieces will cost more. Second, if you know who
sells the jewelry, you can keep a constant eye out for new
pieces or sales. Do not wait for the week before a big event to
look for new jewelry. Be prepared. Shop early and buy often.
3. Choose locally owned and Mom & Pop retailers. The best way
to ensure a broad selection of unique fashion jewelry is to have
a vast array of small retailers. Put your money where your mouth
is. If you like the diversity that local boutiques and online
retailers bring to the market, support them with your cash. For
example, if you have a cause, such as the rebuilding of
post-Katrina New Orleans, choose New Orleans area business (I
like fleurdelisfashions.com.)
4. Give feedback. Tell the stores what you like and do not
like. The best part about locally owned and Mom & Pop stores is
that they will listen to you. They want your business and want
to hear your feedback and suggestions. (Try getting that from
*Mart!)
Do not get tricked by the shopping clones that say, “Who cares
if I shop at big box stores? I am getting what I want for a
cheaper price. That is the way of a free market.” That excuse is
acceptable for generic items like toothbrushes and floor
cleaner. Why would any woman want to be generic and cheap when
it comes to her style?

New jewelry fashions need several factors going for them if
they are to succeed. These include aesthetics, price, timing,
and maybe even just sheer, plain luck. Threader earrings seem to
have all these qualities in abundance. Also known as earthreads
or ear strings, threader earrings have a very large following,
especially among the young set, who think that they are and
cool.
Threader earrings are exactly what they sound like: a length of
a thin chain that the wearer threads through one or more ear
piercings. The chain is attached to a small metal bar – called a
lead — on one end, and the other end is adorned with decorative
materials such as gems, beads, or crystals. The wearer first
inserts the lead, slides the chain through the piercing and then
just lets the earring dangle. Threader earrings are especially
attractive in individuals with two or more earlobe piercings
because they can mix and match designs, and even knot or weave
the chains of the threader earrings together to create a funky
effect.
The chains used are very thin, delicate and light. They usually
measure from three to five inches and are often made from metals
such as gold vermeil and sterling silver. Influenced by the
decorative ornaments used, the themes of threader earrings’
designs range from the playful to the sophisticated. Pearl
embellishments impart a sense of elegance, while multicolored
vintage crystals or flashy glass beads make threader earrings
perfect for casual wear.
Young celebrities, or those counting themselves as members of
the X and Y generations, are ardent wearers of this type of ear
fashion. The young and famous seen at highly publicized events
wearing threader earrings include actresses Hilary Duff, Alicia
Silverstone and Lindsey Lohan, as well as musicians such as
Alicia Keys, JoJo and Kelly Clarkson.
Ear strings are an example of successful, contemporary fashion
and they have the makings of something that is here to stay.
They are functional, easy to wear and easily customizable; with
just a little practice, they are easy to make. Threader earrings
join other jewelry items that are instrumental in bringing out a
person’s sense of fashion and style.

The Spring 2008 fashion jewelry trends are all about “pop”.
Wondering what to wear with your trendy neon shirtdress or bold
black and white safari print skirt? Don’t be afraid to continue
the trend with a pop of color and style in your jewelry. The
following are the top five ways to pop up your style this
season.
#1 Compliment Your Color Palette: Bright colors are in this
Spring. From fluorescent yellow to neon green, Spring 2008
fashion has put a sophisticated twist on the colors made popular
in the 80’s. But, don’t break out your old lace gloves and
rubber bracelets just yet. The modern “Material Girl” knows this
Spring’s fashion jewelry trends are all about complimenting the
outfit not overpowering it.
#2 Know When Less Color Is More: When wearing a solid bright
color, pick jewelry in more minimal colors. For example, wear a
soft orange colored pair of earrings with your neon orange
dress. Gold and silver tones are also great to do this. Add a
pop of style with the size of the jewelry pieces you choose. Add
a chunky bracelet, a large fleur-de-lis necklace, or big hoop
earrings.
#3 Pop Not Peacock: Multicolored prints are also in this year.
It is not necessary to represent every color of your outfit in
the jewelry you wear. Instead, choose jewelry that pulls out one
color from the print. It is recommended that you pick a color
that is less prevalent. This technique is a subtle way to draw
the eye to both your outfit and your accessories.
#4 The Little Black Dress With A Kick: Black and white is
considered the “new black” this season. Don’t make a mistake
and think that you can only wear black and white accessories.
After all, you don’t want to look like you stepped out of an old
black and white movie. Add a pop to your look with brightly
colored accessories. It’s amazing how a thick red bangle, a
yellow choker, or a bright blue (yes, I said blue) pair of
earrings can bring depth to a monochrome outfit. The trick is to
pick one bright color and wear it sparingly. This fashion
jewelry trend is fun and glamorous.
#5 Don’t Go Overboard: It is possible that you may find a great
chunky jewelry set with a necklace, earrings, ring and bracelet.
Although you may love all four pieces, try not to wear them all
at once. Instead, pick one or two (depending on the size)
jewelry pieces that will bring attention to your or your
outfit’s best feature. If you are wearing a sleeveless halter
dress, stack on the bracelets or a ring. Want to add emphasis to
your neckline, put on a necklace.
Mixing and matching pieces is fine. Just make sure you don’t go
overboard with the same size, color, or style. Wearing too much
pop can turn you from a fashion jewelry trend setting diva, to
grandma with each extra item you put on. Remember, the goal is
to compliment your new Spring look, not distract from it.
